FAQ
Materials
How do I know if a material is suitable for my laser cutter?
All our materials are suitable for laser cutting, and most are also suitable for engraving. However, it's important to know the limitations of your machine. For example, a diode laser cannot (properly) process acrylic due to the wavelength of the laser source, and a 40W CO₂ laser will struggle significantly with 9mm MDF due to its thickness. We have indicated for each material whether it is suitable for both a diode laser and a CO₂ laser.
Whether your specific machine can cut through the desired sheet material is something the manufacturer knows. Consult your machine's manual or test a piece of material.
Are the sheets exactly the specified size?
The sizes are approximate; due to saw loss, they can be a few millimeters larger or smaller.
Why aren't all materials completely flat?
Some materials are slightly warped from the factory, like thin birch plywood. This warping is minimal and can be resolved by placing a small weight on the sheet during laser cutting or by cutting your project in sections.
I'm looking for a material that isn't listed on the website.
Send us an email! We can supply many more sheet materials, colors, and thicknesses on request than are indicated on the website.
I'm looking for a custom size, is this possible?
Absolutely, business customers have the option to request a quote for custom sizes.
What exactly are "laser-ready" materials?
Read here more about laser-ready sheet materials.
Do you sell remnants or sample sets?
At the moment, we only sell our standard materials, value bundles, and accessories. In the future, we will also sell sample chains and remnant bundles, but these are not yet available. Keep an eye on the website for updates!
Are your materials tested on CO₂ lasers and diode lasers?
All materials are tested on both CO₂ lasers and diode lasers. Each material indicates which laser source it is suitable for.
What does it mean if a material is sustainable or local?
Sustainable materials are partially or fully recycled, upcycled, or sourced from sustainable origins. Local materials are designed and produced in the Netherlands with Dutch raw materials.
Which glue do you recommend for acrylic or wood?
For wood, use a waterproof wood glue like this glue.
Does Laser Cut Supply also sell protective film or application film?
Yes, you can find them here.
Which materials are suitable for engraving?
Almost all materials can be engraved, but not every material shows the engraving well. On acrylic, engravings appear white, so on white acrylic, they almost completely disappear. Materials like corrugated cardboard and foam are more challenging to engrave due to their low density and composition.
What is the difference between cast (GS) and extruded (XT) acrylic?
Read all about it in this article.
What sizes do you offer as standard?
The sizes are indicated on the materials pages.
Laser Cutting
What is the difference between laser cutting and engraving?
Laser cutting is the complete cutting through of the material to cut out shapes. Engraving is a light marking on the surface creating a relief or color difference to apply logos, for example. Both are done with the same machine.
What is protective film and do I need it?
How do I get the best result?
This depends on several factors such as material, air assist, speed, power, etc.Take a look at our knowledge base , we have various articles about it here!
How do I find the right settings for my machine?
The right settings are always a combination of power and speed. To find the right settings, these two need to be tested together. Most laser software packages have a built-in functionality to test this.
